Hurricane Matthew has created another humanitarian crisis for the children and adults of Marigot. The storm went right over the area where St. Dominique/Pezzelli School is located and put many of our friends at risk. Fortunately, there was no loss of life. the school sustained minimal damage, due to the quality of construction and the buildings saved lives by serving as shelters. However, 20 homes, all of the crops and gardens and many animals (in most cases the only source of food) were destroyed).
We have been responding as best we can to the immediate needs of the school community. Many families, as well as losing their homes, are in dire need of food. Through the efforts of Fr. Nelson, his volunteers and your past generosity, we are able to feed each family of our school rice and beans at the present moment. In addition to this, we are sending money to build the homes that were lost in the hurricane. The money we have sent and will send will buy wood, metal for the roofs and other tools needed to begin the process of rebuilding, once again.
